Digital Transformation And Organizational Performance In Punjab: A Study Of Small And Medium Enterprises (SMES)
Abstract
Punjab houses numerous small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across multiple sectors including manufacturing, trading, agriculture, and digital services. The digital transformation of SMEs has been seen as a strategic response to competition but despite growing discussion, there is little research that supports how digital transformation is associated with organizational performance in Punjab's SME ecosystem. This study creates a capability-ecosystem model to assess the digital transformation success factors using data from a survey of 300 SMEs in the five major districts of Punjab, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala and Mohali/SAS Nagar. The study uses the resource-based view (RBV), the dynamic capabilities theory, and the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework as context for identifying the five success factors of digital transformation: technological readiness, organizational agility, digital leadership, innovation orientation and ecosystem support. Regression analysis shows that these five identified factors have a significant relationship with four different facets of performance; i.e., financial, operational efficiency, customer reach and innovation performance, where they account for between 48.5% and 53.4% of the variation in the outcome (R² = 0.485 to R² = 0.534; p < 0.001). Digital leadership and organizational agility are found to have the strongest associations with all of the performance outcomes, whereas ecosystem support serves as an enabler. This study contributes empirical evidence from within Punjab to the existing digital transformation literature for SMEs and provides practical information to the SME owner, policy makers and digital infrastructure providers within Punjab.
