Teacher’s Perceptions Of School Guidance And Counseling Services: Educational Implications For Secondary Education
Abstract
Guidance and counseling services have emerged as an essential component of school education because they contribute to students' academic achievement, emotional well-being, social adjustment, and career preparedness. While professional counselors play a significant role in providing these services, teachers remain the most accessible educational professionals who interact with students on a daily basis. Their perceptions, commitment, and participation substantially influence the effectiveness of school guidance programmes. This paper examines teachers' perceptions of guidance and counseling services in secondary schools and discusses their educational implications. The study is developed from an empirical investigation conducted among secondary school teachers in Andhra Pradesh, where data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings indicate that teachers generally acknowledge the importance of guidance and counseling in promoting students' holistic development. They perceive these services as valuable for addressing academic concerns, behavioural issues, emotional adjustment, interpersonal relationships, and career planning. However, inadequate institutional support, shortage of professionally trained counselors, limited teacher preparation, and insufficient policy implementation continue to restrict the effective delivery of guidance programmes in schools. The study emphasizes that strengthening teacher competencies in guidance and counseling through systematic professional development and institutional support can significantly improve educational outcomes. The paper contributes to the growing discourse on comprehensive school guidance by highlighting the central role of teachers in creating supportive learning environments and by proposing practical strategies for strengthening counseling services in secondary education.
