Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse three stories: “Küçükçekmece Okyanusu”, “Öksüz Civciv” and
“Cankurtaran Yılmaz”, which were meant for children and written by a teacher of Turkish and author, Rıfat Ilgaz.
These three books are analysed with a view to check their convenience in fulfilling the needs of reading classes.
Also, the analysis comprises the responses and comments of 105 elementary school teachers and 125 elementary
school children. A highly reliable and valid “Book Evaluation Scale” which was developed by researchers is used
as a measuring tool. Findings of the study indicate that the elementary school teachers found the books “efficient”
or “very efficient” with respect to the language employed in them, their form, organization, literary value and
convenience for children. But the pictures used in the books are found “partly efficient”. The students answered a
questionnaire with questions selected from an activity called “I Love Reading Books”, which takes place in
reading classes. The suggestions herein are formed in accordance with the answers obtained from each group
