The Role of Material Use in Mathematics Teaching on Mathematical Thinking Skills and Misconceptions

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Apartment Sudoku materials in mathematics teaching on mathematical thinking and misconceptions of mathematics teachers. The study was designed as a case study model of qualitative research methods. The participants formed 52 mathematics teacher candidates studying in the second and fourth grades of a university in the Southeastern Anatolia region. The mathematical thinking skills review form and the misconception form developed by the researchers were used as data collection tools. The data were analyzed by content analysis method. As a result of the research, it was determined that the mathematics teacher candidates could acquire the characteristics of the colors in the Apartment Sudoku material, relate these properties to the problem solving and reasoning processes, in general can express the definition and properties of the misconceptions and correctly identify the misconceptions of the colors in this material. Some suggestions were made to the researcher who
wanted to work in this area in the context of the findings obtained.
