Transformation of “Self-Perception” from The Empire to The Republic: Citizenship Education in the “1924 First Primary Schools Curriculum”

Abstract

The main tenet of all the regulations and revolutions was to go through the transition of the state of the subject to the citizenship status for all the residents. During the Ottoman period, in primary schools, the course “Musahâbat-ı Ahlâkiye (Religion, History and Civilization)” was given to shape the selfperceptions of the primary school students. With the transition to the republic, the name of the course was changed to “Musahâbat-ı Ahlâkiye and Ma’lûmât-ı Vataniyye” in “The 1924 First Primary Schools Curriculum” and its contents were redesigned according to the concepts of “nation “and“secularism”. This study comparatively tackles the curricula and course objectives which were designed to shape the selfperceptions of the students after the Ottoman era.
