Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate opinions of social studies and classroom teachers on
social studies curriculum. Sample of the study was drawn randomly by using cluster sampling technique among all
fourth, fifth grade classroom teachers and social studies teachers in central districts of Adana province. “Social
Studies Curriculum Evaluation Questionnaire” which was developed by the researchers was used as main data
collection tool. Descriptive statistics and content analysis techniques were used in analyzing data. Findings indicated
that measurement and evaluation part of the curriculum was found most weak side of the curriculum among aim,
content and learning-teaching process. However, general philosophy, assumptions and perspective of the
curriculum, applicability of the curriculum and in service training needs of teachers were found more negative than
curriculum itself. Teachers believe that the curriculum resemble contemporary educational thought but there are
some problems in implementation. The most important problem is the absent of society, parents, physical conditions
and in-service training supports.
