Abstract

The 50th anniversary of India's independence was celebrated on August 15, 1997. 1 It's a historic day not only for Indians, but for the rest of the globe, too. There may be no better indicator of global stability than India's democratic success and the strengthening
of its foundations in Asia, the second most populous country in the world. Indians should be proud of their 50 years as a thriving, democratic, and secular nation with hundreds of millions of people representing an array of socioeconomic, religious, and ethnic groups. This is a major accomplishment for the country. But how well have they been developed?
