Abstract

In India, women are the most at risk and are therefore the weaker sex, and among women, widows are the most disadvantaged because of the abrupt change in their socioeconomic standing following the passing of their spouses. The death of the spouse in a marriage partnership involves the creation of new ties within the family, among the kin-group, and within the community. Even among women, widows are overlooked. In India, widows lead poor lives regardless of the social class to which they belong. Most castes forbid
remarriage, and she is subject to several taboos and oppressive restrictions as a result. Worst of all, she is regarded as unlucky. This paper reflects Review on Sociological Status of Widows in rural areas.
