Abstract

Oral Communication and Presentation Skills (OCPS) is one of the courses that taught as one of the compulsory courses in almost every university in Pakistan. The assessment of oral communication course varies from one teacher to another, as well as from one university to another. Every teacher uses his/her various assessment strategies depending upon the content of the course along with the requirement of the university. One of the challenges of Oral Communication Course is how to assess the students. This study aims to explore the prevailing conceptions and actual practices of the assessment of EFL learners’ speaking skills at the tertiary level. The study is qualitative in nature which used a survey questionnaire adopted from to collect responses from 60, randomly selected teachers from different public and private sector universities of Pakistan. The data was analyzed interpreted using descriptive analysis. In addition, this study determined what assessment strategy suits best for the specific requirement considering the course of OCPS.
