Analysis of 1st grade social studies curriculum of 2018 in terms of character education

Abstract

In Turkey, the 1st grade social studies curriculum was updated by the Ministry of National Education in 2018. The purpose of this study was to analyze the curriculum in terms of character education. In detail, the study aimed to find out which learning outcomes of the 1st grade social studies curriculum indicate which characters within which categories, namely the categories of “knowledge,”
“attitude,” and “skill.” The study was designed as document analysis of qualitative research. The document was the 1st grade social studies curriculum updated in 2018. The data were analyzed using both descriptive and content analysis. One of the results was that all the learning outcomes of the curriculum addressed at least one character within one of the three categories of “knowledge,” “attitude,” and “skill.” Another result of the study showed that the characters indicated by the learning outcomes of
the 1st grade social studies curriculum were interdependency, sensitiveness, cooperation, good manners, kindness, responsibility, patriotism/citizenship, unity of family, and respect. Moreover, the results showed that each character addressed by the 1st grade social studies curriculum has wide content
