Abstract

The Ministry of National Education in Turkey started to employ the teaching programs which were
developed under constructivist approaches since the 2005-2006 academic year. These programs based on
student centered teaching methods adopted the approach that assessment and evaluation is a part of the
teaching process. Emphasizing the process requires frequent use of various measurement tools or techniques
in comparison with the ones used in traditional approaches. In addition to teacher centered assessment in
various performance based activities, methods that involve students in assessment and evaluation are also
utilized. One of these methods is self-assessment. The purpose of this study was to identify teacher candidates’
views on self-assessment method. The study was conducted during Introduction to Educational Sciences and
Special Education courses with 243 teacher candidates in their first and fourth years at Amasya University
Faculty of Education in 2012-203 academic year. Teacher candidates were provided with tasks requiring
performance throughout the study and they were asked to evaluate themselves using self-assessment methods.
Teacher candidates were asked to provide their views on self-assessment methods by responding to the
question form composed of three open-ended questions. Qualitative data obtained in this manner were
analyzed descriptively and the findings were discussed in the light of literature. It was identified at the end of
the implementation that teacher candidates had a positive attitude regarding the use of self-assessment
method
