Teachers' Views On The Education Of Syrian Refugees

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal the perceptions and practices of the teachers regarding the education of Syrian refugee children. One of the qualitative research method called case study is used. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews with 4 teachers, and semi-structured forms from 15 teachers. The data were analyzed by the content analysis method. The results showed that learning Turkish language and adaptation to school environment were the primary problems of Syrian children. The other important finding was that teachers did not feel compitent enough themselves about teaching to Syrian refugee children. Teachers also stated that they did not organize class environment for Syrian refugee children and the program which they used in class was not aproppriate for refugee children. It has also been stated that children should have learn Turkish language and attend to preschool education for adaptation problems. Finally, it has been suggested that social support services should be provided by National Education Ministry to reduce the effects of traumatic experiences that children faced with.
