The Mughal Religious Policy With Special Reference To The Temples Of Mathurā
Abstract
Historians of Mathurā tend to evaluate the Mughal relations with Mathura in terms of the religious policy of individual Mughal rulers, perhaps in the light of the abovementioned impressions. This study seeks to segregate fact from fiction, establishing how the Mughal system of religious grants in the reign of either Akbar or Aurangzeb was determined not by the individual ruler's religious policy but instead by a more generic and consistent approach to the question of grants, determined by broader economic and political concerns of the empire.
