The Effect of Teaching Mathematics With Games on the Mathematics Achievement of Secondary School 7th Grade Students*

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of teaching mathematics with games on the mathematics achievement of the 7th-grade students at the secondary school. The study group of the research consists of 39 students receiving education in the 7th-grade of two schools in Bartin province in Turkey. The experimental method was used in the evaluation phase of the problem in the study. The design of the study was determined to be the pretest and posttest quasi-experimental design with a control group. In the research, data was collected by the achievement tests covering the units of Percentages, Lines, and Angles, Polygons, Circumference and Circle of the 7th-grade mathematics lesson. These achievement tests were developed by the researchers. Nonparametric techniques were used in the data analysis due to the small number of individuals in the groups. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used for the analysis of the dependent groups, and the Mann-Whitney U Test was used for the independent groups. When it was
examined in terms of the subjects of mathematics, it was determined that teaching mathematics with games in the subjects of Percentages, Lines and Angles, and Polygons had more positive effects on the achievement of students according to the educational activities at school.
