Teaching the “Order of Operations”

In this article, a mnemonic device is suggested to be used in instruction as a memory aid through
it a student might remember easily some rules or important information on some topics that he/she makes errors
such as the rules for order of operations. Specifically, “Paray4 Üstünde Bulan Çabucak Tatile Ç4kar” (PÜBÇTÇ)
mnemonic device is introduced for the purpose of recalling this rule. There are many other variations have been
using in other countries. t is assumed that introducing such a mnemonic device to Turkey will help Turkish
students when dealing with arithmetic and algebraic operations. In this article, it is also introduced a table
strategy hopes to decrease the number of errors when solving the problems with the order of operations.
