Abstract

The purpose of this study is to assess a learning environment created in order to popularize
mathematics among young pupils (10 - 13 years old). The environment was designed on the basis of some
theories and approaches in mathematics education and was integrated in a project called Eskisehir Mathematics
School. Conducted in case study method, the data was collected from various sources. A questionnaire was
administrated to the participants. Pupils’ and teachers’ written reports were used to complete the questionnaire
findings. The results indicated that the activities were appreciated by the majority of participants and had some
positive effects on participants’ views and attitudes towards mathematics, meaning - with certain limits - the
contribution of such an environment to the popularization of mathematics.
