A Model Suggestion to Prove That “The Role of Independent Assortment in Genetic Diversity is More Important Than Crossing Over”

The most important event that causes genetic diversity in sexual reproduction organisms is meiosis and
impregnation. Due to independent assortment and crossing over which happens in meiosis, the possibility of many
different variations of gametes from same parents occurs. However, students try to explain genetic diversity that occurs
by meiosis just with crossing over and they don’t mention the role of independent assortment and impregnation. This
study attempted to emphasize the role and importance of independent assortment in genetic diversity by a model which
was made by cartons. The role of crossing over and impregnation was not discussed because the main purpose of this
model is to highlight the role of independent assortment. It is hoped that by this model, understanding both the
fundamental cause of genetic diversity and the law of Mendel will be easier.
